Greenland approves Critical Metals' Tanbreez mining plans

In brief

UNIAN reports approval for the rare-earth project in southern Greenland; its report gives no date for the start of commercial mining.

Critical Metals has received Greenland government approval to carry out mining plans at the Tanbreez rare-earth deposit in southern Greenland, UNIAN reported on October 7, citing Polish publication wnp.pl.

The company is already carrying out infrastructure work and a drilling programme, according to the report. UNIAN did not specify the approval date or a timetable for commercial mining, or report that commercial production had begun.

A March 2025 preliminary economic assessment put the project's after-tax net present value at at least $2.1 billion, UNIAN reported. That figure is a project valuation rather than revenue from extracted minerals.

UNIAN also cited analysts linking the decision to increased efforts by the United States and its allies to develop critical-mineral supply chains outside China.
