Ukraine’s air-raid app cannot map ballistic missiles in time, Ihnat says

In brief

The app shows approximate drone and cruise missile movements, but ballistic missiles leave only seconds to enter the data, the Air Force official said.

Ballistic missiles are not shown on the map in Ukraine’s Air Alert app because there is too little time to enter their positions, Air Force communications chief Yurii Ihnat said in a television appearance reported by UNIAN on October 22.

Ihnat said the updated app displays some aerial targets, including drones and cruise missiles, to help users understand their direction of travel. Ballistic missiles leave only seconds once they appear in the airspace, he said.

Ukraine receives intelligence from its partners, although that information is sometimes absent, Ihnat said. He stressed the importance of partners’ space-based intelligence for providing the earliest possible warning of ballistic missile launches.

The map shows approximate movements rather than precise target locations in real time, UNIAN reported. People should head to shelter immediately when an air-raid alert is issued.
