Klimkin sees chance of partial ceasefire, expects Russian sanctions demands

In brief

Ukraine’s former foreign minister says Putin could seek further US sanctions relief in exchange for a limited ceasefire.

Former Ukrainian foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin believes a partial ceasefire agreement in Russia’s war against Ukraine is possible, according to remarks published by LIGA.net on October 23.

Klimkin said he expected the United States to push hard for an agreement. In his assessment, Vladimir Putin would demand concessions from both Washington and Ukraine even for a ceasefire limited to particular sectors, with further sanctions relief among Russia’s likely demands of the US.

He identified fertiliser offers as a possible way for Putin to appeal to Donald Trump through American farmers’ interests. Klimkin also suggested that contracts involving oil, liquefied gas and other resources could be possible.

These were Klimkin’s assessments of potential bargaining. The LIGA.net report did not specify agreed terms for a partial ceasefire, sanctions concessions or the resource contracts he discussed.
