Lithuania adds Shevchenko to school literature curriculum

In brief

Study is recommended this school year and will become compulsory for third-year gymnasium pupils taking the advanced course from September 2027.

Lithuania has added works by Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko to its Lithuanian language and literature curriculum, Novynarnia reported on October 5, relaying LRT coverage cited by Suspilne.

This school year, teachers may recommend Testament and To the Dead, the Living and the Unborn to eighth-graders and third-year gymnasium pupils on the general course. They may also choose other works by Shevchenko.

From September 2027, Shevchenko's work will be compulsory for third-year gymnasium pupils taking the advanced course. Teachers will select the poems for lessons on Romanticism.

The ministry cited his literary importance and historical connection to Vilnius, where he lived for several years. It also said the change would strengthen cultural ties with Ukraine and support the integration of Ukrainian children studying in Lithuania.
