Moldova and Ukraine discuss joint border checks on Moldovan soil

In brief

Moldova's interior minister says Russian attacks prompted the withdrawal of Moldovan personnel from four crossings on Ukrainian territory.

Moldova is in talks with Ukraine about Ukrainian border guards operating on Moldovan territory to conduct joint checks, Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin said, according to an October 21 UNIAN report citing Newsmaker.

The minister said Moldova had already withdrawn its border guards and customs officers from four crossings on Ukrainian territory because of frequent Russian attacks on border areas. Moving Ukrainian personnel to the Moldovan side remained the subject of negotiations.

Misail-Nichitin said joint checks in Moldova would reduce risks from attacks near its border. Other crossings could be considered in the medium term, depending on security risks. UNIAN did not name the crossings or give an implementation timetable.
