Ukraine opens new road crossing on Romanian border

In brief

The Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmației crossing has an initial capacity of up to 400 cars a day, with facilities for trucks and buses planned.

A new road crossing between Ukraine and Romania opened on October 8, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Mykola Kalashnyk said, according to UNIAN. The Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmației crossing is the third road crossing with Romania in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region and its first new one in almost 20 years.

The crossing is operating with temporary infrastructure and can process up to 400 cars a day in its first phase, Kalashnyk said. Ukraine built an access road and installed modular border and customs facilities, while Romanian partners built a checkpoint and a new bridge across the Tysa River.

A planned permanent complex would add capacity for up to 360 trucks and 50 buses daily after construction is completed. UNIAN’s report did not specify a completion date. Kalashnyk also said the route would make family visits easier for residents of the Solotvyno community, including ethnic Romanians with relatives across the border.
