In brief

The US secretary of state said Washington wants a constructive role in ending the war and that Ukrainian NATO membership is currently off the agenda.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said current trends in Ukraine were moving away from an end to the war, RBC-Ukraine reported on October 6, citing DWS News.

Rubio said Washington wanted to play a constructive role if it could help end the fighting. He said the United States was watching developments and remained focused on ending the conflict, while expressing regret over the large number of deaths.

He also said Ukraine's membership in NATO was currently off the agenda. His remarks described the present position rather than announcing a final decision on future membership. The RBC-Ukraine report did not specify where he spoke.
