Court sets conditional December 11 deadline for Trump deposition in BBC case

In brief

The US president must testify by that date unless discovery is extended. His lawyers have proposed January 2027 instead.

A US court has ordered President Donald Trump to give sworn testimony in his defamation case against the BBC by December 11 unless the discovery deadline is extended, LIGA.net reported on October 22, citing the BBC's account of the judge's ruling.

Trump had been scheduled to give his deposition on October 16 but cancelled, citing matters of state, the report said. His lawyers proposed January 11–22, 2027; those dates have not been approved by the court in the account reported by LIGA.net.

The lawsuit concerns a Panorama programme that combined two excerpts from Trump's speech before the January 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol, creating the impression of a direct call for violence. The BBC acknowledged an editing error and apologised but denies defamation. Trump accuses the broadcaster of deliberately distorting his words.
