CIA continues supporting Ukrainian intelligence, The Atlantic reports

In brief

Intelligence sources described continued cooperation despite tensions between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to UNIAN's account of the magazine's reporting.

The CIA continues to support Ukrainian intelligence services and is stepping up covert operations against Russia, The Atlantic reported, citing a retired senior officer who frequently visits Ukraine. UNIAN recounted the magazine's findings on October 24.

A Baltic intelligence officer described CIA operations against Russia as more aggressive than under Joe Biden. A senior Ukrainian intelligence official who works directly with the agency praised its personnel's support. These are sources' assessments; UNIAN's account included no public official confirmation of the covert operations and did not establish CIA involvement in any particular Ukrainian strike.

The report also described CIA director John Ratcliffe's contacts with Moscow and Kyiv. Ratcliffe met Russian intelligence counterparts in Moscow in August and briefed Zelenskyy on that trip in Ireland in September, according to sources cited by the magazine.

The Atlantic cautioned that Ratcliffe would comply if Trump ordered an end to intelligence support for Ukraine. That was a conditional assessment, rather than a report that cooperation had ended.
