Germany arrests Ukrainian citizen suspected of spying for Russia

In brief

Prosecutors allege he gathered information on defence production and NATO-related personnel and facilities. A detention hearing is scheduled for October 23.

Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office arrested a Ukrainian citizen in Brandenburg's Oder-Spree district on October 22 on suspicion of working for Russian intelligence. Novynarnia reported the arrest, citing European Pravda's account of a statement by German federal prosecutors.

The suspect, identified in the report as Vadym Y., was arrested under a warrant dated October 15. Prosecutors allege that he had maintained contact with Russian intelligence through an intermediary since at least July 2025.

According to prosecutors, he gathered information in Germany about armoured vehicle, ammunition and explosives production, as well as personnel and military facilities linked to the defence of NATO's eastern flank. Some information was publicly accessible; other information was allegedly obtained from people connected to Europe's defence industry.

He is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice on October 23 for a decision on pretrial detention. The allegations remain suspicions under investigation.
