In brief
Leaders of seven cities and four Budapest districts called on other municipalities to help Ukraine prepare for winter and meet urgent humanitarian needs.
Mayors of seven Hungarian cities and leaders of four Budapest districts have pledged to help their Ukrainian twin towns through the coming winter, LIGA.net reported on October 21, citing an open letter published on Budapest city council's website.
The signatories promised assistance within their municipalities' means, focusing on winter preparations and urgent humanitarian needs. LIGA.net's report did not specify aid amounts, equipment, delivery deadlines or assistance already delivered.
The city leaders represent Szeged, Székesfehérvár, Érd, Gödöllő, Hódmezővásárhely, Szombathely and Budaörs. They urged other municipalities to contact Ukrainian partners, identify their needs and involve residents, institutions, civic groups and businesses.
Published ahead of the 70th anniversary of Hungary's 1956 revolution, the letter drew a parallel between Hungarians' struggle then and Ukraine's defence against Russian aggression, stressing the right to independence and inviolable borders.
