UK announces £54 million in winter support for Ukraine

In brief

The package allocates £20 million to energy security and £34 million to heating, water and direct financial assistance.

Britain has announced £54 million in energy and humanitarian support for Ukraine ahead of winter, LIGA.net reported on October 8, citing the British Foreign Office following Ed Miliband’s visit to Ukraine.

The package includes £20 million for emergency repairs to electricity networks damaged by Russian strikes, backup generators, solar energy and technologies to diversify electricity supplies.

A further £34 million is intended to help Ukrainian families with heating, water and direct financial assistance. The programmes are to be implemented with Ukraine’s government and humanitarian organisations, including UNICEF, UNHCR and the Ukrainian Red Cross.

Miliband separately announced £6.3 million to support Ukraine’s efforts to investigate war crimes and hold those responsible accountable. LIGA.net’s report did not specify whether all the announced funding had reached recipients.
