In brief

The European Commission president said the bloc would maintain its energy course despite sharp price rises, with Russian gas imports targeted to reach zero by the end of 2027.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s plan to end Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, UNIAN reported on October 6. She spoke at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Von der Leyen said Russia’s share of EU gas imports had fallen from 45% to 12% and would be reduced to zero by the end of next year. Her remarks set out a future goal; UNIAN did not report the adoption of a new legal measure at the speech.

She said gas prices had risen by 140% since late February and diesel prices had doubled over the same period. She put Europe’s additional spending on imported fossil fuels since the start of the war in Iran at €100 billion. UNIAN did not specify the price benchmarks behind those figures.

Von der Leyen expressed confidence that Europe could overcome the energy crisis and emerge stronger, while maintaining its course on Russian gas.
