Kim Jong Un outlines plan for multipurpose army companies

In brief

North Korea’s leader wants companies to combine capabilities from different military branches, according to KCNA.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has outlined plans to turn army companies into multipurpose units capable of carrying out different combat tasks independently, LIGA.net reported on October 24, citing state news agency KCNA.

Speaking at a gathering of company commanders, Kim said the units should become central to strengthening the military. He argued that improving their capabilities would rapidly transform the armed forces’ combat capacity. The gathering also discussed intensive training for real combat and operating in difficult conditions.

LIGA.net’s report did not specify an implementation timetable, equipment or the number of companies involved. It described a planned reorganisation without establishing that it had been completed.

The plans come amid North Korea’s military involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine. LIGA.net reported that Pyongyang had sent troops to fight against Ukraine in exchange for economic benefits and military technology.
