Poland seeks nuclear deterrence cooperation with US and France

In brief

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said decisions would require consultations with allies, without giving a timetable.

Poland wants to expand its role in nuclear deterrence through cooperation with the United States and France, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said in an interview with WNP, as reported by RBC-Ukraine on October 24.

He said closer military cooperation with Washington extended beyond a permanent US troop presence. Warsaw also wants to participate in a nuclear sharing programme that allows some NATO members to contribute to nuclear deterrence, according to RBC-Ukraine's account.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said cooperation with the United States would not rule out developing nuclear deterrence ties with France. Poland intends to increase its commitments gradually.

He gave no timetable for specific decisions, saying consultations with allies were needed first. RBC-Ukraine's report did not describe an agreed decision to station nuclear warheads in Poland.
