Kyiv water utility outlines sewage contingency plan for potential strikes

In brief

A senior official said backup systems make the Bortnychi treatment plant resilient, with pumping and transport planned if infrastructure suffers critical damage.

Kyiv's water utility has prepared a contingency plan for damage to sewage infrastructure, deputy director general Serhii Horkutsenko said in an interview with Ekonomichna Pravda, reported by RBC-Ukraine on October 12.

Horkutsenko rejected suggestions that a few targeted Russian strikes could shut down the Bortnychi sewage treatment plant. He cited the site's large area and duplication of key systems.

He said the utility planned to divert sewage to two or three designated points and, in the event of critical damage, pump it out and transport it. He assured residents that sewage would continue to drain from homes even without electricity. The report described contingency preparations and did not report a shutdown of the plant.

Horkutsenko acknowledged possible temporary environmental risks if treatment were disrupted. He identified sewage spilling into residential areas as the main threat, saying specialists' priority was to prevent flooding in basements and around homes.
