Klitschko urges some Kyiv residents to consider temporarily leaving

In brief

The mayor cited intensifying Russian attacks ahead of winter but said he was not calling for a full evacuation.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has suggested that residents with friends or relatives outside the capital consider temporarily moving away as Russian attacks intensify ahead of winter. RBC-Ukraine reported his remarks to AFP on October 8.

Klitschko said he was not calling for a full evacuation of Kyiv. He warned that Russian attacks could cause a major crisis if they disrupted the city's water supply.

The mayor also said the capital could face a severe situation if air defences failed to work, regardless of how well the city prepared. His remarks described possible consequences; RBC-Ukraine's report did not announce an evacuation or report a citywide water-supply failure.
