Ukraine urges public not to share images of damaged energy sites

In brief

The Energy Ministry warns that photos and videos could help Russia plan further attacks and put repair crews at risk.

Ukraine's Energy Ministry has urged people not to film or share images of damaged energy facilities, strike locations or the movements of repair crews, RBC-Ukraine reported on October 8.

The ministry warned that even a single photograph or short video could reveal a strike's precise location, the extent of damage and the progress of repairs. Russia could use those details to adjust subsequent attacks, it said.

Russia has significantly intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in recent weeks, targeting power lines and transformers, according to the ministry. It said publishing images also endangers crews working to restore equipment.

The ministry urged people to follow official updates on the power system and the consequences of attacks. The statement quoted by RBC-Ukraine did not identify specific instances in which published images had been used to guide further strikes.
