In brief
The Defence Ministry says some contracts will be terminated and planned purchases dropped to fund more pressing military needs.
Ukraine’s Defence Ministry plans to free up 15.6 billion hryvnias following a review of existing contracts and planned purchases with the General Staff and Logistics Forces Command. RBC-Ukraine reported the announcement on October 6, citing the ministry.
The ministry said changing technology, combat methods and unit needs meant purchases planned in 2024–2025 might no longer suit conditions at the front. It cited equipment specifications that no longer meet operational needs, suppliers unable to deliver planned volumes and some equipment that has yet to complete codification.
Other needs are fully covered by partners, while some tasks can be performed using cheaper equipment bought in larger quantities, the ministry said. Some existing contracts will be terminated and some planned purchases will not proceed, with the money intended for higher-priority military requirements.
The ministry said decisions on existing contracts would be implemented in accordance with the law and affected manufacturers had been informed. It withheld the list of weapons involved for security reasons. The announcement describes a planned reallocation; RBC-Ukraine’s report did not establish that it had been completed.
