Russian strike damages Ukraine's Book Chamber, leaving archives at risk

In brief

Broken windows at the Kyiv institution must be sealed to protect books from rain and moisture, its director says.

A Russian missile strike damaged the Ivan Fedorov Book Chamber of Ukraine in Kyiv overnight into October 19, RBC-Ukraine reported, citing Detector Media and the institution's director, Olha Vaskivska.

Vaskivska said two ballistic missiles landed nearby, with the blast wave damaging windows in storage areas and administrative rooms. She said the openings urgently needed to be sealed against rain and moisture because there was nowhere else to move the books.

No employees were injured, including a guard who was inside during the strike, she said. Staff were awaiting police and had been told to leave the damage untouched until officers arrived, after which losses would be documented. RBC-Ukraine did not specify how many books, if any, had been damaged in this attack.
