Germany extends temporary protection for Ukrainians to March 2028, UNIAN reports

In brief

UNIAN says existing permit holders receive an automatic extension, while some arrivals from October 9 face a condition involving Ukrainian military obligations.

Germany has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028, UNIAN reported on October 8, citing amendments to a regulation published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette.

According to UNIAN’s account, the extension is automatic for Ukrainians already in Germany who hold residence permits under Section 24 of the Residence Act, known as AufenthG.

The report describes a separate condition for people entering Germany from October 9, 2026, who are subject to military obligations under Ukrainian law. UNIAN says the relevant provisions do not apply to them unless they confirm that they are fulfilling those obligations.

UNIAN did not specify the regulation’s number or a detailed procedure for that confirmation. Its account describes an extension for existing permit holders and a condition for the specified new arrivals; it does not establish the outcome of any individual residence application.
