Family reports Ukrainian cave explorer and volunteer Borys Hora killed in war

In brief

His daughter said he died on October 19. The family is awaiting DNA test results.

Ukrainian cave explorer and military volunteer Borys Hora has been killed in the war, his daughter Alina Yarmakova and Ternopil mayor Serhiy Nadal said, according to Novynarnia.

Yarmakova said he died on October 19. The family was still awaiting DNA test results when Novynarnia published its report on October 24. The report did not specify where or how he died.

Born in Ternopil in 1969, Hora founded the Krystal tourism club within the Plast scouting organisation in the 1990s, teaching young people and organising mountain hikes and tourism competitions. He later settled in Zalissia near Mlynky cave, where he established a caving base and worked as a guide.

Hora also organised rafting trips on the Dniester and advocated for the river's environment. Nadal said he volunteered for military service when Ukraine needed defending.
