Lithuania’s parliament has approved at first reading a proposal to remove Article 137 of the constitution, which prohibits weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on Lithuanian territory, RBC-Ukraine reported, citing LRT. The vote was 106 in favour, 18 against and six abstentions.
A second vote is required and cannot take place sooner than three months after the first. Parliamentary speaker Juozas Olekas said it was planned for January 12, 2027. Final approval requires at least 94 votes in the 141-seat parliament.
Olekas said removing the provision would strengthen military deterrence and eliminate legal differences between Lithuania and other EU and NATO members. The initial approval does not bring the amendment into force or constitute a decision to station nuclear weapons in the country.
